Catherine Metcalf B. A. Hon’s

Catherine was born in Kensington, but has lived in Somerset most of my life.
She studied Fine Art Painting at Kingston-Upon-Thames, London.  Whilst in her 2nd Year at
University, Cathy won The David Murray Award for Landscape Painting from the
Royal Academy of Art. Her final year of university was spent with an appointed Royal Academy
Tutor and travelling to Derbyshire and Cornwall to do landscape paintings under his direction.

Cathy is particularly interested in movement and atmosphere, and inspired by the way light and wind
moves through the landscapes affecting the environment and it’s moods.
Her drawing are in Conté as this best reflects the effects she is trying to achieve. You will see a
contrast in the Conté Drawings and watercolours. She is greatly affected by the mood of her
surroundings and the medium she chooses to use reflects this.

When drawing people and interiors, Cathy likes to discover the subjects personality or place well. With the
Intention expressing all her emotions and experiences into her art. Cathy paints with either Oil or Encaustic’s,
which take her a considerable about of time......several months to complete. The Encaustic paintings are
between 4 to 6ft square in size. Encaustic painting is a very old tradition dating back to the Ancient Greeks
who painted using beeswax, dry pigment on lime plaster walls. Cathy has adapted this technique to do her
own unique way of painting.
